Novamont: Report on the Importance of the Bioplastics Industry

In September, Novamont S.p.A., Novara, Italy, presented a report to the European Parliament on the contribution made by the bioplastics industry to the pursuit of a sustainable European economy and on the essential role of European legislators in fostering even further development.

In his speech Francesco Degli Innocenti, Product Ecology and Environmental Communications Manager at Novamont and a board member of European Bioplastics, highlighted the importance of the Roadmap to a Resource Efficient Europe, recently published by the European Commission. This document shows the need to support the widespread use of biodegradable plastics and promote virtuous processes in the area of green chemicals.

The biodegradable bioplastics industry and the systemic approach of Novamont, which is in favor of minimising the environmental impact on the entire production chain (from packaging to agricultural crops) and the intelligent use of natural resources, provide an unparalleled case study for the implementation of a bio-based economy.

“Support from European legislators will be fundamental if this approach is to be adopted on a widespread basis, in order for Europe to become an inclusive and competitive sustainable economy and to allow the pursuit of the objectives established by the 2020 Strategy,” concluded Degli Innocenti.
