Engel Austria: World’s Biggest IM Machine

The plastics processor Otto Graf GmbH, Teningen, Germany, has put into operation a two-platen injection molding machine with a clamping force of 55,000 kN from Engel Austria GmbH. The Duo 5500 machine has a shot weight of 140 kg and produces underground tanks with a capacity of 6,500 liters with the aid of three injection units operating together, each of which is fitted with a 260 mm diameter screw. With a length of 25 m and an overall weight of 585 t – not including the 160 t mold – it was necessary to install the machine in a two-meter-deep pit. According to Engel, these dimensions make it the world’s largest injection molding machine of its kind. Moreover, with a specific energy consumption of 0.34 kWh/kg during production, the machine is very economical.
