Conference: Polymers in Oilfield Engineering

Applied Market Information (AMI) and Materials Engineering Research Laboratory (MERL) joined forces in organizing an international industry conference, MERL Oilfield Engineering with Polymers 2010, to bring together polymer experts and oilfield operators to look at the new demands on materials.

At the event, that took place from 20–22 September in London, research results and new approaches were discussed. Elastomers, thermoplastics and composite materials play a vital role in many critical applications in the oilfield such as coatings, insulation, pipes (bonded and flexible), hoses, seals, flexible joints and bearings, inflatable tools, umbilicals, risers, blow out preventers etc. The industry challenge is to operate safely and reliably in increasingly remote and hostile environments. Key to this is research and develoment, design, qualification and operational experience.

The programme covered a range of critical topics including explosive gas decompression and high performance materials for extreme temperatures. Speakers included leading operators, contractors, researchers, component and materials suppliers.
