Champagne from Biodegradable Glasses
Nissei and Michio Komatsu Present World Novelty
Japanese injection molding machine manufacturer Nissei will take to the stage at K 2019 under the motto “Injection for Innovation”. Sales Manager Hiroshi Shimizu says that the company is working on technical solutions to simplify injection molding processes and reduce the carbon footprint. In this connection, Nissei will be presenting a thin-wall application involving the bioplastic PLA: the production of champagne glasses in an 8-cavity mold on a NEX 280V-71E all-electric injection molding machine of 2800 kN clamping force and in a cleanroom-compatible configuration.
A special feature of the process is that in order to render the viscosity of PLA suitable for the application, Nissei uses the MuCell process from Trexel but adds a low proportion of supercritical CO2 to the melt. Without this fluid, only short shots were produced in test runs. The sprue, which has been patented by the Japanese engineer Michio Komatsu, is licensed to Nissei. Also involved in this project with the machine manufacturer were its partners Total Corbion (PLA), Mold-Masters (hot runner system) and Pecker Seiko (toolmaking).
The transparent champagne glass has a wall thickness of 0.65 mm, is 205 mm tall with the base fitted while the goblet itself measures 125 mm. Eight glasses are produced at once in a cycle time of 37 s and with a shot weight of 185 g. One target group for marketing could be airlines that are looking for more environmentally friendly solutions. According to Michio Komatsu, the glasses degrade in a composting plant in just over ten weeks but require more than three years in the open countryside.
