bvse: Quality is the Key
In the UK, plastics recycling will be broadly expanded within the next years. This has become clear during the 16th International Conference on Recycling of Plastics which took place in Bad Neuenahr, Germany, in June. This year, more than 410 industry experts took part in the event with a special focus on the UK.
According to the British organization Wrap, which is involved in waste prevention and resource efficiency, approximately 2.5 million tons of plastic packaging enter the UK market every year. In 2012 about 644,000 tons (25 %) were recycled. By 2017, 42 % are to be recycled. In order to achieve this target, current efforts would have to be doubled. Today, already more than 40 % of plastic bottles are recycled, due to the immense development of collecting systems in the last ten years. For household rigids and films the recycling rates still range below 5 %.
The industry experts from the UK agree that collections from households and businesses need to be developed further. At the same time they doubt that the current system of packaging recycling is capable of essentially improving plastics recycling.
