Bayer MaterialScience: No More Nanoprojects
Bayer MaterialScience AG, Leverkusen, Germany, is to focus its development activities even stronger on topics closely related to its core business. The company will therefore terminate its work on carbon nanotubes (CNT). In recent years, researchers at Bayer MaterialScience, together with external partners, have worked on complex questions relating to the reliable production of special carbon nanotubes. They created methods for scaling up the production processes, and developed new catalyst generations and product types.
According to the company, there are no groundbreaking applications for the mass market in sight and large-scale commercialization is not imminent at present. Nevertheless, Bayer MaterialScience regards the know-how as an important basis for possible subsequent applications of CNT, e.g. for optimizing lithium-ion batteries.
