Market Report about BOPET Films
BOPET film is one of the fastest growing polymer film substrates according to a new report from industry consultants, AMI Consulting, published in September 2019. Growth is driven by its extensive use in both packaging and technical applications due to its unique combination of properties, excellent processability, adhesion to coatings and adhesives and great decorative appeal.
Capacity is forecast to increase by over 50% by 2023, with the biggest surge in capacity during 2013 to 2018. In 2018, global BOPET capacity is estimated at 6.7 bn tonnes, with the biggest volume located in China.
Versatility and Sustainability
BOPET is hugely versatile, not only for packaging but also for its suitability for non-packaging applications in such diverse and growing markets as solar panels (PV), touch screens, capacitors and identity cards.
Recognizing BOPET’s versatility, many plastic film manufacturers are seeking to upgrade and diversify their production facilities in order to spread their customer base and market reach. Strategies include moving into BOPET production in addition to core products such as BOPP, offering BOPET production in completely new geographic locations, thereby being closer to customers, and upgrading key BOPET equipment in order to optimize sales and utilization rates.
Sustainability is a key disruptor. Although concerns around environmental issues and plastic packaging continue to plague flexible packaging suppliers, BOPET films continue to increase in demand due to several different socio-economic and technical performance factors. Globally, BOPET films continue to grow thanks to the difficulty in replicating all their properties without a) increasing costs and b) increasing the volume of raw materials used.
With consumers increasingly questioning the use of plastics in general, and those not widely recycled in particular, key players in the BOPET industry are keen to highlight the many positive environmental credentials of their products. Polyester is the most widely recycled polymer; BOPET films can include high levels of rPET (recycled PET), and many key players are investing in new plastics recycling technology such as pyrolysis or additives which can make BOPET fully biodegradable.
