Acoustic Emission Analysis Predicts Damage and Material Failure

The Sound of Materials

Although the first microdamage in a part occurs long before its total failure, the damage is extremely difficult to detect from outside. However, the Institut für Kunststofftechnik (IKT) is investigating a method using acoustic emission analysis to detect the onset of material-specific damage as precisely as possible. This permits an improved and more reliable design of components.
