World’s largest MuCell installation

The companies Mürdter Metall- und Kunststoffverarbeitung GmbH, Mutlangen, Trexel GmbH, Wiehl and KraussMaffei Technologies GmbH, Munich, all in Germany, are cooperating on the production of large parts. The partners recently announced the joint start of the world’s largest MuCell injection molding machine at the Mürdter pilot plant.

This entailed fitting a physical foaming module to a MC 5400-17200 of 54,000 kN clamping force. This means that, when searching for the right production solution, the partners can injection mold large parts, e.g. instrument panel beams, in a compact form initially so that they can be compared directly afterwards with versions produced by the MuCell process. Mürdter has large machines for trials and small series production and an adjacent moldmaking shop where the results can be incorporated directly into the molds. This saves time and money.

"MuCell is a great solution for very large parts because, in addition to general benefits such as low deformation, shorter cycle times and lower clamping force, its ability to economize on material and to mold lighter parts are especially attractive," explains Andreas Handschke, product manager for MuCell at KraussMaffei . This machine maker has been granted a worldwide license for MuCell direct sales and acts as a one-stop shop for complete systems. Mürdter contributes its experience in moldmaking and foamed-parts production into the partnership while Trexel, as a technology partner for MuCell applications, provides advice on component design.
